Flix Brewhouse® Wins Three Medals at World Beer Championships

Flix Brewhouse takes home one gold and two bronze medals at Beverage Testing institute’s 20th Annual World Beer Championships.

[Round Rock, Texas – October 29, 2014]  Flix Brewhouse, the world’s only first-run cinema microbrewery, won a gold medal for its specialty Kill Shot ale at the recent World Beer Championships category competition held in Chicago.  Kill Shot is a full-bodied Scotch ale featuring aromas of toffee, apple, peach and roasted chestnuts.  The brewer also was awarded two bronze medals for its well-regarded Lupulus IPA and best-selling 10 Day Scottish Ale.

Flix Brewhouse® is both an emerging national craft brewer and a cutting edge cinema eatery that serves upscale nouvelle pub cuisine while guests enjoy the best entertainment Hollywood offers. Head Brewer Justin Rizza keeps six core beers on tap and regularly creates numerous specialty and seasonal beers.

“We are extremely proud of the success of our carefully crafted beers and always honor the acknowledgement of quality by our peers and our judges. To win three awards synchronously is really tremendous! This just stokes the passion with which we bring to the brewhouse every day,” said Rizza.

Flix Brewhouse® is based in Round Rock, Texas and will be opening new state-of-the-art cinema eateries in Des Moines, Iowa and Carmel, Indiana in fall 2014 and spring 2015, with plans to expand to at least 15 units over the next several years.  More information can be found at www.flixbrewhouse.com.

Founded in 1994 by the Beverage Testing Institute, the World Beer Championships is the oldest blind tastingcompetition in America and is open to all commercial brewers worldwide.  Unlike other events lasting just a few days, this competition takes place over several months and judges taste only 30 beers per day, submitted by highly respected brewers from around the world including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the United States.  The methodology suggests that the results from the World Beer Championships are much more consistent and meaningful to consumers than the results from other competitions.  Tasting notes from the competition are available at www.tastings.com.

Flix Brewhouse Announces Head Brewer - October 28, 2014

Flix Brewhouse Announces Head Brewer for New Merle Hay Mall Location

Des Moines, IA:  Flix Brewhouse, the world’s only first-run movie theater that operates an in-house brewery, has named Mike Gauthier as head brewer of its new Des Moines location at Merle Hay Mall.   Flix is scheduled to show its first movies in December, and features full in-theater dining.

An award-winning brewer, Mr. Gauthier has been a part of the Midwest craft beer scene for 15 years. He started brewing in Chicago, and worked as an assistant brewer and then head brewer for Court Avenue Brewing in Des Moines. While there, he introduced countless specialty and seasonal beers, many of which were barrel aged, and several new core brands.  In 2008, Mr. Gauthier’s beers swept the classic style at the Festival of Barrel Aged Beers in Chicago.  Most recently, he has been part of the management team at El Bait Shop.

“The passion I have for great beer is the greatest asset I bring to the table.  In addition, there’s patience to take the time to brew a beer the right way, and humility to know when a beer hasn’t turned out the way I hoped. There are so many beers I am really looking forward to brewing at Flix, and I hope the folks who walk through the door are looking forward to drinking them,” Mr. Gauthier said.

Flix Brewhouse features a brand new state-of-the-art seven-barrel brewing facility custom made in Europe, and has a refrigerated capacity of twenty-five thousand pints of its own beer ready to serve.  Flix brews eight core beers, plus up to half a dozen customized seasonal, regional or specialty beers. In addition to its own beers, the theater offers thirty other taps showcasing top-rated local, regional and national craft beers.

About Flix Brewhouse: Founded in 2011 in Round Rock, Texas, Flix Brewhouse is America’s Cinema Brewery and is the only first-run movie theater in the world that also operates a full brewery. By leveraging new technologies as well as its own proprietary innovations, the Flix concept is designed to ensure that going out to the movies is once again the special experience many Americans grew up to love.  The company plans to add 12 more locations over the next five years.

Flix Brewhouse Announces General Manager for New Merle Hay Mall Location

Des Moines, IA:  Flix Brewhouse, the world’s only first-run movie theater that operates an in-house brewery, has named Garth Stackhouse of Urbandale as general manager of its new Des Moines location at Merle Hay Mall.   Flix is scheduled to show its first movies in December, and features full in-theater dining.

Mr. Stackhouse has 20 plus years in the restaurant industry, in roles ranging from fine dining to bartending at the local tap. For the past dozen years he has operated Applebee’s units, serving for the last decade as general manager its top-performing Merle Hay restaurant.

“When Flix Brewhouse was first announced I was as excited as anyone else in Des Moines, but had no idea my future was about to take a dramatic turn,” Mr. Stackhouse said.  “When the offer came to run this new cinema-restaurant-brewery, I was thrilled by the opportunity to apply everything I’ve learned in the hospitality industry the past two decades, and apply it to this innovative full-service entertainment concept.  There’s real magic in a great movie-going experience, and combined with top-notch food and the best in craft beer, Flix Brewhouse will be a premiere entertainment destination in Central Iowa.”

“There’s a big challenge ahead, to hire and educate half a dozen managers and over 100 new team members, but I can’t wait to get started” Mr. Stackhouse added.  The Flix Brewhouse hiring center will open in Merle Hay Mall in late October.

A Chicagoland native, Mr. Stackhouse relocated to the Des Moines area in 1995 and started a family. Making the transition to Flix Brewhouse, he brings a wealth of industry experience, knowledge of the local landscape, a passion for great craft beer and a belief in the magic of a great movie-going experience.

About Flix Brewhouse: Founded in 2011 in Round Rock, Texas, Flix Brewhouse is America’s Cinema Brewery and is the only first-run movie theater in the world that also operates a full brewery. Groundwork For Merle Hay Mall Renovations Begins - July 31, 2013

Groundwork for Merle Hay Mall Renovations Begins

Demolition of the south Mall parking deck along Douglas Avenue kicks off the re-development of Merle Hay Mall.

[Des Moines, IA, July 31, 2013]  Construction crews fenced off portions of Merle Hay Mall’s parking lot off Douglas Avenue this week to prepare for the demolition of the Mall’s two story parking deck. Beginning Monday, August 5th, demolition will begin on the south parking deck to prepare for the Mall’s multi-million dollar redevelopment which will include a new façade and stores along the south elevation, the addition of Flix Brewhouse on the upper level of the Mall, and interior common area improvements. Demolition of the parking deck will be complete by early September. Abundant parking will still be available on the north, east, and west lots during this period.

“Currently the south parking deck blocks the view of the Mall from Douglas Avenue. By removing the parking deck, customers driving along Douglas Avenue will have a clear view into the new retail stores and nightlife from the renovated south elevation” says Joe Murdock, General Manager of Merle Hay Mall.

Construction is slated to start in mid-September for re-development of the Mall’s south elevation and Flix Brewhouse. Flix Brewhouse will be Iowa’s first multi-screen cinema and dine-in restaurant/microbrewery with 900 seats and eight auditoriums. Construction activities are anticipated to run through the second quarter of 2014. The addition of Flix Brewhouse and the new retail storefronts along Douglas Avenue will continue to change the shape and future of Merle Hay Mall.

Sonya Schultz, Helzberg Diamonds® Store Manager, asked to be transferred to the Merle Hay Mall location stating, “It’s an exciting time to be a part of Merle Hay Mall”.  She further states, “I’ve always felt a strong sense of community here and I’m eager to see the next chapter in the Mall’s story.

Recent additions at Merle Hay Mall include a nearly 25,000 sf MC Sports and, opening in August 2013, new prototype stores for DEB Shops® and Maurices® which will be located next to Staples.  Other additions include Massage Heights®, which will open a new location next to the east Mall entrance near Staples in November, 2013. In addition, Red Rock Wildlife Conservation Center will open in late August in the Target wing across from Shoe Carnival® and Ulta®.  Red Rock Wildlife Conservation Center will showcase an exciting interactive wildlife experience, expanding to more than 11,000 square feet.

These exciting developments, and others to follow, will keep Merle Hay Mall as a strong community mall that continues to enhance the customer shopping experience, as it has for over 50 years.
